Built for compliance teams

Video redaction is the process of permanently covering identifying information in a video so the released copy cannot reveal those identities. Video Blackout is desktop video redaction software for teams that must do that work before a public records release, a DSAR response, or an internal review. Processing stays on the machine that opened the file. This site (videoredaction.io) does not accept uploads.

What Video Blackout redacts

Faces and license plates support auto-detect and manual boxes. Audio supports manual time ranges only (mute or beep) — there is no speech-to-text. Other on-screen identifiers (badges, screens, paperwork) are drawn by the operator.

Video Blackout capabilities

Identifier Auto-detect Manual
Faces Yes — on-device detector Yes — draw or adjust boxes; keep or redact per person
License plates Yes — on-device detector Yes — draw or track boxes
Other on-screen PII No Yes — static or tracked regions (badges, screens, paperwork)
Audio No — no speech recognition Yes — operator marks time ranges; mute or beep on export

100% Offline Video Redaction

Cloud editors ask you to upload evidence. That is the opposite of what counsel, records officers, and school administrators can accept. Video Blackout runs as a Windows application: open a local file, mark regions, export a new MP4 with mosaics burned into pixels and selected audio rewritten.

No Internet Required

After install and license activation, you can redact on an air-gapped PC. There is no in-browser trial and no “upload to redact” button on this site. If you need the deployment story, read offline and on-premise video redaction.

How a typical job runs

  1. Install on Windows 10/11. Sign in with Google or email. Bind a device license.
  2. Open a local file. Run face and/or plate detection. Review every box.
  3. Draw extra boxes where detection missed. Mark audio ranges that must not be heard.
  4. Export hard-coded H.264. Keep the original as the system of record.

Procurement comparing tools should start with the video redaction software brief. Research groups that search for anonymisation can use the video anonymization page. Assisted detection is documented as AI video redaction.
